Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is a model of music therapy that is guided by research to address functional changes for people with neurological disorders. It involves a collection of techniques that use the perception, production and performance of music to stimulate, shape, and change movement dynamics, speech and language skills, and cognitive skills.
NMT therapists are trained and certified by the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy, with Chroma acting as the main training partner in the UK.
NMT has clear protocols for targeting specific functional needs. Its techniques are informed by the neuroscience of music and neurorehabilitation, and through working with other disciplines. The techniques can be used effectively when provided individually or in groups, and when provided by a lone music therapist or alongside other disciplines. The NMT model utilises a systematic method of designing each treatment for each client’s needs. This maintains the work to be focused and clear to non-music therapists, which is important when communicating outcomes and progress updates.
