STEPS Rehabilitation extends contract with Chroma to provide music therapy services

Sheffield-based STEPS Rehabilitation has extended its contract with Chroma, the UK’s leading provider of arts therapies, to provide music therapy services for a further 12 months.

Family-owned, STEPS Rehabilitation is a 23-bedroom, state of the art, short-term (up to 12-18 months) residential and day facility that uses as wide a range of therapies to support rehabilitation for clients.

The contract increases Chroma’s support to three-days per week – up from two days, with Chroma extending its provision of neurologic music therapy for STEPS clients. This will positively impact  clients by increasing the number of individual sessions available, provide more opportunities for joint working with clients (two therapists working alongside each other), and allow further group work to be developed around the needs of the individual. Ultimately this will contribute to providing the best treatment for clients in the neuro-rehabilitation unit.

Chroma will continue to work with NHS, insurance and private-funded clients who attend STEPS having suffered traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and complex trauma as well as amputees who will receive support pre-and post-receiving prosthetics.

As well as individual Neurologic Music Therapy intervention with clients, the music therapist has helped develop some focussed group work.  A long running Voice Group targets  the needs of clients with voice & speech difficulties. A specialist Upper Limb Group has been formed that assists clients in developing strength, control & range of movement of the upper limbs, core & shoulders. The extension of the STEPS/Chroma contract means that the team can work collaboratively to build upon the successes of these groups.  Part of the plan includes introducing a Balance and gait reeducation Group to the timetable, which will support amputees in the early stages of wearing their prosthetics. In all of these groups, the music therapist works alongside other therapists in the STEPS team using Neurologic music therapy techniques to enhance rehabilitation goals & objectives.

Clinical director Toria Chan said:  “Three years on, Chroma remains the right partner to enable us to deliver the very best rehabilitation for clients recovering from serious brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and complex trauma. Chroma has a fantastic team of passionate and dedicated professionals who are always a pleasure to work with. We are really excited to be increasing our contract with Chroma to provide music therapy 3 days a week at STEPS, and have lots of plans for further innovative development with Daniel and Rebekah for 2021!”

Music therapist, Rebekah Keenan added: “I am really looking forward to building upon the support we are providing STEPS, especially in developing our group therapy work, where I think we can dramatically improve the rehabilitation outcomes for clients and their families. Despite COVID-19, we are pleased that we’ve been able to continue to provide essential rehab to clients.”

Daniel Thomas, managing director at Chroma said: “We are privileged to be able to be a part of the STEPS success story. They are a forward-thinking company who are proactive in their approach to rehabilitation and understand the value of NMT as part of the rehab care plan for their clients. They have made us feel a part of their team and we are looking forward to continuing to build upon this partnership.”
